FBESoc's FIRST AGM (Ever)
Faculty of the Built Environment Society (FBESoc) is going to be officially launching by becoming affiliated with Arc!
To do this we need to have our first ever Annual General Meeting (AGM). The first AGM will be held on the 26th August, 2011 and we will be meeting on the Mezzanine Level, Faculty of the Built Environment, Red Centre West Wing at 4:00pm and should be done around 5:30 pm.
At this meeting we will be electing our Executives for the next 12 months as well as accepting our Club’s constitution, this is why it’s pretty important as many people turn up as possible! All club members who are UNSW students get a vote. You don't have to do anything, just turn up and give your vote to making the FBE better!Hope to see you there! If you have any questions then just ask below ;)
Hope to see you there!

DISCUSSION: Design e2 Series
As students of the Built Environment we're constantly being exposed to ideas of sustainability & environmental response in design through people like William McDonough (Author of Cradle to Cradle), Norman Foster (from Foster + Partners) and our very own [up until recently at least] Peter Graham (Author of Building Ecology: First Principles For A Sustainable Built Environment). And this is all well and good, it makes for some very interesting reading/study, but for me there's a key element missing from this presentation of ideas: Brad Pitt's voice.
Good thing PBS over in the United States has put together this most excellent series called e2 (e Squared) which discusses the sustainable design of cities as well as buildings, all of which is narrated by Brad Pitt himself. Some very interesting ideas are discussed, such as how cities can be more easily be transformed into sustainable centres, how environmentally responsive buildings can be given to the masses & how can we change what we're doing now to something different; nothing all that different from what the people above have been telling us. I think the best thing about it is that you get to listen to Brad Pitt while still technically doing something that can be counted as study (got to love this faculty)!
But the very best thing is that the whole first season of e2 is available on Youtube, so now you have no excuse to not have an excuse to finish that project for Tuesday. & did I already mention its narrated by Brad Pitt!?

EXHIBITION: The Mad Square, Modernity in German art 1910–37
Thought some of you may be interested in this exhibition part of The mad square: Modernity in German art 1910–37 exhibition at AGNSW.
"The move towards architectural modernism began in the 1920s in Germany, during the dynamic period of the Weimar Republic. Neues Bauen – literally ‘New Building’ – represented a break from the traditions of the past and the adoption of new ideas, building types and spatial concepts.Inspired by aspects of the Die Wohnung [The dwelling] exhibition held in Stuttgart in 1927, this exhibition, conceived in 2002, presents a breathtaking overview of the icons of early modern architecture. Showing buildings which were ahead of their time and illustrating how forward-looking architects attempted to improve people’s standard of living, the selected buildings and approaches are still inspiring and relevant today."

EXHIBITION: Now + When, Australia's entry into the Venice Architecture Biennale 2010
Just a heads up that the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) entry into the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale, Now and When: Australian Urbanism, that is currently touring Australia is in Sydney @ The Object Gallery until 25th September 2011. The exhibition explores how Australia, one of the most urbanised nations on the planet, might let its urban centres evolve into the future. The NOW component of the exhibition surveys Australia's current landscapes through the presentation of photographs of major urban centres which contrast with open cut mines in regional Australia, documenting six urban and anti-urban landscapes in their current state. The WHEN component explores what our urban centres might look like +40 years into the future, exploring how they may evolve & what features will characterise them.
Over all a really good exhibition that I recommend everyone in the FBE see, it only takes about 15 mins to watch and raises some really interesting questions, as well as give you some inspiration for your own projects.
And did I mention the whole thing was in glorious 3D? Well worth the visit if you ask me..
